The holidays have hit full force and our house oozes of seasonal traditions. We love choosing activities a few times a week where all bodies can participate...and this month, I've put the family to work by coloring!
Many recall in 2015-2017 when the Adult Coloring Book Phase became wildly popular. Reports even came out that coloring could lower stress and reduce bad moods. Well, my friends, if it does that for adults, no wonder kids have cornered the coloring market from the beginning!
The month of November I have carried on a tradition that my mom started years ago, which feeds my holiday excitement...which always bubbles up for the last quarter of the year. The ever popular...Thanksgiving Tree!
I've worked now for a few years in collecting discounts/coupons at my neighborhood Joanne's, and slowly building my collection of Sunflowers and Fall colored Hydrangeas. We used hand cut out pumpkins when my big side of the family got together, and we all wrote what we were thankful for on them. This year, the addition was kids coloring cut-outs!
We go to the almighty google and search for Thanksgiving Coloring Pages and simply print. These coloring pages become our evening activity and the boys LOVE IT! We all 4 color, talk about primary and secondary colors, practice mixing colors, and staying in the lines (Brady - my 2 year old is slowly understanding the 'in the line' concept). I love seeing the boys ask questions, and strive to do use different strokes to mimic their parents. Then, after the kids go to bed, I stay up and cut out the 'art' we just created, punch a hole in the top, put some fishing line through it to make it ornament ready. The next morning, they come downstairs ready to hang their creations on the tree! Sometimes they are emphatic about wanting to hang these on the wall, and with painters tape and glossy paint style we painted with we do allow this. But most do end up on the tree:)
It has added such a warmth and personal touch to my tree, and to my season of giving thanks, and I love that they get to see something that they create, can be used to decorate our home.
